Detroit hospitals to merge, announcement says

Big changes are coming for hospitals in the Detroit area, according to a recent announcement given by the officials for a number of different sites. The hospitals are expected to merge some time within the next year. The three specific hospitals that are going through the process are Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, Oakwood Healthcare in Dearborn, and Botsford Hospital, which is located in Farmington Hills.

Fire department mergers could cut taxes in Detroit area

Counties around Detroit, Michigan, are looking for ways to cut taxes. Lately, the fire departments have been asking for tax increases so that they can keep the firemen that they have on the payroll, rather than slashing jobs. Economic times have been hard in the area as of late, and laying off more workers is only going to make things worse and potentially put people at risk if the department cannot retain enough people to provide excellent services. Local residents have grown tired of the tax increases and asked them to stop.

Michigan teachers picket for new employment contracts

Teachers in Iron Mountain, Michigan, have been working for more than 600 days without a contract. The school has been facing some very serious budget issues, losing around $1 million in state funding. They have not been able to keep paying the teachers at the same level, and they are now proposing new employment contracts for the teachers that will force them to take a pay cut.

Contract dispute slows development in Detroit, Michigan

When the Ford Wixom site that use to sit near the intersection of Wixom Road and I-96 was demolished, developers hoped that it would not take long to begin construction and bring commercial tenants to the area. The Detroit-based Ford Motor Company even sold the majority of the land -- 240 of the 317 acres -- to a developer for that purpose. However, a contract dispute is now holding up development and reportedly making it so that people who were once interested in the land are no longer looking to build there.
