Two free newspapers are going to merge in Detroit, Michigan, according to a recent statement that was released. The papers in question are "Real Detroit Weekly" and the "Detroit Metro Times." After the merger, they are simply going to keep the name of "Metro Times." However, by coming together, they allege that they will have the largest alternative weekly paper in all of Michigan.
Real Detroit Weekly is the newer of the two papers, having launched as recently as 1999. The Metro Times, however, was founded back in 1980. The man who has been publishing the Times will continue to serve in that capacity, but the man who was publishing the Weekly is planning to have a new title, as he will move into the role of president of events.
Both say they are excited about how big the weekly can get with the merger, and they say that this will make it possible for them to get more information out to people in the area than they could have done otherwise. This includes information about arts, music, nightlife and the like. They also say that an emphasis on local ownership is a good thing, and they seem glad that a merger could be created that would allow that to continue.
Even for publications that are free, it is important for parties on both sides to know about how the local business laws are going to impact a merger of this size. Any business owner who is considering a merger may want to look to this decision as an example of what needs to be done and how businesses can come together through mergers to increase their size and influence rapidly.
