Tax to-do list for business owners

For the hundreds of thousands of Americans who own their own business, tax time is an important part of the year and one that requires much thought and preparation. For those that have formed their own small business within the last year, filing a tax return for it can be a new and confusing task. With less than two months remaining until the tax deadline (April 17), it is time for small business owners to get their tax affairs in order.

To prepare for the deadline, it is important that a small business owner enlist the help of a Detroit Certified Public Accountant to make sure the process is being addressed in a correct manner. One of the main chores that business owners need to tend to is the gathering of important documents and receipts that must be accounted for during this process.

The advent of technology has also made the process quicker, easier and more efficient. There are a number of ways business owners and individuals can file their taxes online. This helps reduce time and amount of paper work a business owner will have to sift through.

If your accountant does not suggest it, business owners should look into forming a corporation or limited liability corporation if they had not already done so. This will shield an individual's assets from potential lawsuits filed against the business and perhaps help save on taxes.

It is also important during this time to ensure that all necessary business licenses are up to date. This can be done through the mail, in person or even online.

For those who are the teachers in this process and not the student, prepare to be busy. It is important to diligently maintain the schedule full of meetings with clients so that you are not buried under work come April.
