Kidpreneur brings business start-up skills to Detroit kids

It's never too early to start giving kids the tools they will need to be the American entrepreneurs of the future. That's the philosophy behind a business called Kidpreneur. The company offers classes in technology and entrepreneurship to students from 9 to 13 years of age. Now it's coming to Detroit.

Thanks to the latest "pilot pop-up program" sponsored by D:hive at its storefront location on Woodward Avenue, Kidpreneur will have a downtown Detroit home for two months. Kids will learn to develop their own new business start-up ideas and learn how to sell them. They will also learn the tech and programming skills needed to build a profitable business. There will also be a program offered in Northville.

A spokesman for D:hive, which will host the Kidpreneur program beginning the middle of next month, says that they want to help "train the next generation of tech entrepreneurs and programmers." The classes will include everything from producing videos to building robotics to developing smartphone applications. While there is a charge for the classes, students can apply for a grant to help cover the costs. Thanh Tran, who started Kidpreneur, says that by offering their classes to kids in Detroit, the company aims to make the classes "more accessible to a wider range of audiences."

The better prepared kids are to enter the business world when they finish school, the better able they will be to deal with all of the logistics involved with building a new enterprise. They can surround themselves with a strong business, financial and legal team, even if it is a small one at first. Likely, many of these kids will use the skills they acquire through Kidpreneur to take more advanced business courses and then bring new businesses to Michigan in the future.
