Successful Michigan company celebrates big milestone

One of Michigan's biggest success stories over the past few decades recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Bell's Brewery, the largest brewery in the state and one of the leading craft beer makers around the country, celebrated its anniversary with an appreciation from many for how far the company has come.

When the company was founded in 1983, it was established as a home brewing supply shop. Bell originally made beer in a 15-gallon soup and sold kegs for $56. Along the way, Bell and others pushed for legislation in the state to allow brewpubs to sell beer by the glass. The company credited that legislation as being a fundamental turning point in allowing craft beer to become much more successful.

Bell's story demonstrates what can happen when successful business planning is implemented for a new business. New businesses have several challenges they must face to get off the ground, much less become competitive in the marketplace within which they operate.

This includes many formal requirements for doing business in and out of the state, as well as having successful business plans in place. It can also include other factors, such as the legislation that Bell pushed for to shift its business landscape. Other companies may also benefit from changes to the law in a particular area.

Ultimately, there is not just one simple formula to follow in order to create a successful business. Many factors will be present -- both those that are anticipated, and those that are unexpected. However, armed with the proper knowledge of the law and the marketplace, business owners can give themselves a leg up against the competition.
